FOUR ”ANY‘S” AND THE SEARCH FOR BUSINESS MODELS
What are some of your top priorities? Two CTOs at in the
October issue of CT’s Communications Executive included
Internet-delivered video and IP set-tops in their answers to
that question:
the delivery of your products on standards-based delivery that
will reach the broadest array of devices. If our customers want
their multi-channel video programming on their PC or their
wireless device, I want to give it to them that way.
BALAN NAIR, SVP AND CTO, LIBERTY GLOBAL:
MIKE LAJOIE, EVP AND CTO,
TIME WARNER CABLE:
What’s driving a lot of the work that we’re doing now is
really the consumer. And what does the
customer want?
More and more, the customer wants
their stuff on whatever device they want,
when they want it, where they want it.
My priorities are in deploying our next
generation in home architecture of
gateways and IP set-top boxes. We
are also working on our next generation user interface that has a seamless experience of VoD, DVR, Linear,
Web and home networking. By web,
We call it the ‘four anys’—any product,
anywhere, any time, on any device… If
you’re going to actually meet that goal, if
you really believe that five years from now, customers more
and more are going to be carrying around a larger array of
personal devices, and just expecting all their stuff to show up
on those devices, wherever they are, you’d better implement
I mean, web services that are integrated into our offering, not just online
video to the set top box….
One area where we are still building our plans is in on-line
video. There has not been a standalone business model that
has been successful, be it advertising, transaction or subscription. However, we hope to have a story that will be accretive
to our long-range plan soon.
